Uncut DECEMBER 2008 - by John Robinson
ROBERT WYATT: SHLEEP
The Domino reissues continue, gloriously.
Friends old - Brian Eno; Phil Manzanera - and new - Paul Weller - joined Wyatt here for an album which sounded wise in the year of Oasis' Be Here Now, but now effortlessly joins Rock Bottom and Cuckooland in his continuum of meditative, jazzy, free-drifting best work. Alfreda Benge's Marc Chagall-like cover image of her husband flying dreamily over a town captures the woozy magic of the expansive work within, while Wyatt's idiomatic English works a particular magic throughout - Blues In Bob Minor a particular highlight. This joins a new batch of reissues: Old Rottenhat, Dondestan, the EPs collection and Cuckooland.
