Rip It Up JANUARY 1991 - by Chad Taylor
BRIAN ENO/JOHN CALE: WRONG WAY UP
These guys had great moments on Another Green World but the best tracks (Lay My Love, One Word, Spinning Away) are closer to Before And After Science. Eno ties himself around Backwater-style lyrics and polyrhythms that are mainstream yet weird at the same time, like The Osmonds from Mars. Mr Cale, who once had a job showing Lou Reed how to use a knife and fork, shines on the roguish Cordoba and In The Backroom and everything is jolly clever, but ultimately Wrong Way Up lacks a certain something. Eno and Cale have broken so much new ground that this return home, to more familiar musics and tricks, is inevitably a let-down.
