BRIAN ENO: THE SHIP
Background: One of popular music's most influential and innovative figures, musician/composer/record producer/singer/writer Brian Eno has been responsible for some of the most cutting-edge music ever made. On The Ship, Eno once more develops the musical form he pioneered, ambient electronica.
Strengths: There are sonic and lyrical explorations on the four compositions here. The centrepieces revolvearound strong variations - from a long-form ambient piece (the title track), lyrics (whether sung by Eno or spoken by Peter Serafinowicz) to a orch-rock cover of The Velvet Underground's I'm Set Free. A fervent sense of mood is evoked throughout the album - that of melancholy reflection.
Highlights: Fickle Sun (i) and Fickle Sun (iii) I'm Set Free
Sounds Like: Well, Eno.
Bottom Line: It is rather awesome to hear Eno's vocals again on record (after over a decade) and they provide a textural slice of humanity into his overall chilled-out relaxed atmospherics.
