BRIAN ENO: ANOTHER GREEN WORLD
His solo albums before this were joyfully preposterous, those that came after were increasingly cerebral, but Eno managed to reconcile his opposing character traits of trickster and mega-brain perfectly in this reflective classic. Going into Island Studios without so much as an idea on the back of a napkin, Eno relied on his Oblique Strategies cards - a series of instructions such as "Try faking it!" - to foster productivity. It worked. With Robert Fripp on guitar, Phil Collins on drums and John Cale on viola, Eno built up proto-ambient mood pieces like Sky Saw and Another Green World. There are tunes in there, too: you can even hum along to St. Elmo's Fire or I'll Come Running.
