DANIEL LANOIS: HERE IS WHAT IS

Soundtrack to recent Lanois doc; Garth Hudson and Brian Eno guest.

Always appreciated more for his production work than for his solo albums, Daniel Lanois has nonetheless put out some striking music under his own name. This collection, like all of his work, conjures a world unto itself, drawing from seemingly random sources to weave a work of mystic, spiritual power. From the ambient Bells Of Oaxaca to the gospel This May Be The last Time, it covers much stylistic ground and many sonic textures (lots of steel guitar), but the sweeping, psychedelic groove of Duo Glide and the breathless Garth Hudson piano improv on Lovechild impress most.
